An introduction to playing Tic-Tac-Toe
Try Tic-Tac-Toe at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Complete a row, column or diagonal of three marks. If the board fills without a line, the round is a draw. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.
Bring this focus to a round
Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.
Your goal
Complete a row, column or diagonal of three marks. If the board fills without a line, the round is a draw. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.
The playing sequence
- Player 1 places a cross in an empty cell.
- Player 2 places a circle in another empty cell.
- Take turns, watching both your winning opportunities and the opponent’s threats.
- The board stops accepting moves when a player wins or the game is drawn.
The controls to know
Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. A new-round button replaces the current round.
An example to follow
Two crosses in the top row threaten a win in the remaining top-row cell. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Keep the controls nearby.
A useful caution
You cannot replace a mark that is already on the board. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
